How we handle errors

Most of what we publish is researched and drafted with the help of AI tools, then reviewed and published by a person. Both make mistakes. AI tools can invent numbers or sources, attach a claim to the wrong source, or change the meaning of a sentence while rewording it. People miss things, misread sources, and rely on information that later turns out to be wrong.

When we find an error, or someone reports one, we:

  1. Check it against the original sources.
  2. Correct the post when we can, record here what was wrong and what we changed, and add a dated note at the end of the post linking to this log.
  3. Publish a rectifying statement here when we cannot correct the post yet, saying what is wrong and what readers should rely on instead. The entry stays open until the post is fixed.

What we list: wrong facts, figures, dates, names or quotes; claims without a source, or with the wrong one; titles or wording changed in a way that altered the meaning; links that send readers to the wrong place. Spelling, formatting and layout changes that do not affect meaning are not listed; site changes are recorded in the Site Log.

What we do not do: we do not quietly rewrite a claim and leave no trace, and entries in this log are not removed. Opinion and analysis are the author’s own; we correct the facts they rest on.

Report an error

If you see something wrong on any Marie Landry Spy Shop page, please tell us. Include the link to the page, what is wrong, and what is correct, with a source if you have one. We read every report.

Pentagon budget report: accounting figures described accurately

On: OSINT Analysis: Pentagon Black Budget and Financial Transparency

What was wrong
The report called $21 trillion "undocumented adjustments", described Rumsfeld’s 2001 remark without context, and said FASAB Statement 56 lets agencies "classify certain expenditures, effectively removing them" from public statements.
What we changed
Now: "unsupported accounting adjustments" (entries without adequate audit trails, not cash proven missing), with the Michigan State source; Rumsfeld’s $2.3 trillion explained as fiscal 1999 accounting entries, about nine times that year’s budget; Statement 56 described as allowing changes to presentation and disclosure to protect classified activities; TARP and the Pentagon’s eighth failed audit sourced.
Cause
Not determined

Incel dossier: mental-health statistics replaced with sourced figures

On: OSINT Dossier: Analyzing the Incel Phenomenon

What was wrong
A table gave anxiety 74%, suicidal ideation 68%, depression 67.5% and autism 25 to 29% among incels, with no source, and estimated the violent fringe at under 5%. We could not find any published study reporting these figures.
What we changed
The table now shows the results of three peer-reviewed surveys side by side (Swansea University 2024, Speckhard and Ellenberg 2023, Moskalenko et al. 2022), with links, and notes that rates vary widely with method. The violence estimate now cites the Swansea study: about one in four respondents said violence is sometimes or often justified.

Google Espionage Playbook: in-text citations could not be verified

On: The Google Espionage Playbook: Using Gemini for OSINT Reporting

What was wrong
The article cites sources in brackets, such as "(Army, 2024; ResearchGate, 2020)", without naming the documents or linking them.
Our statement
We have not been able to identify or verify these sources. Until each is replaced with a named, linked document, treat those citations as unverified. The method described in the article is not affected.
Cause

702 links pointed at Google search pages instead of the sources

On: 108 blog posts

What was wrong
Links copied from AI and Google tools pointed to Google search results (for example google.com/search?q=https://developers.google.com/...) or Google redirect pages instead of the cited source.
What we changed
Every such link now goes directly to the source it names.

On: Good Spy, Bad Spy: Why OSINT Is the Legal Side of Intelligence

What we changed
The original title was restored. The edited text of the article was kept.
